Brown’s the fishmongers was first opened in 1950 by Babs and George Brown. George became the Champion oyster shucker of England and he was also an expert at cutting smoked Salmon by hand. Later their son Jim took over, winning Britain’s Best Fishmonger competition for London and the South East and doubling the size of the shop. Jim also appeared many times on BBC radio shows. These day its George’s grandson, Justin Brown who runs the show. His brother Jason is in charge of the home delivery service. Justin has appeared on Masterchef the show, been featured in an article in the Guardian and is now internationally known. Business is going from strength to strength and so the tradition continues. Jim is now semi- retired but still likes to come in and help occasionally.

“I suppose you could say that I’m passionate about fish. As a family, we’ve always enjoyed fish dishes and are well aware of its health giving properties. I’ve loved running Brown’s, meeting the demands of new trends, tackling changes and watching how the business has developed. Many of our customers have become firm friends and I always enjoy the friendly atmosphere in our shop” he says.

Justin says,
“From a young age I have always been highly passionate about the business and am extremely proud to be the third generation owner of our shop. I have always enjoyed working in the shop with my dad and granddad, from a young boy working on a Saturday to now running the business. My love and dedication for the shop has seen the business grow. My passion for customer service and friendly atmosphere has meant that many of my customers are now close and trusting friends. I enjoy the day today demands of the business and love giving 100% every day. I am excited for the future of Brown’s”
